What is Lifestyle Medicine?

Lifestyle Medicine or Behavioral Medicine is a branch of medicine that emphasizes the use of whole food, plant-predominant dietary lifestyle, regular physical activity, stress relief practices, restorative sleep, avoidance of risky substances and positive social connection as a primary therapeutic modality for prevention, treatment and reversal of chronic disease.

Scientific evidence is clear – poor lifestyle choices are the root cause of modern chronic diseases. Adults with common chronic conditions who adhere to healthy self-care practices experience rapid, significant, clinically meaningful and sustainable improvements in their health.

80% of all premature deaths are due to just 3 poor lifestyle habits  – smoking, poor diet, lack of physical activity, yet less than 10 % of the population tick all four boxes of a nonsmoker, BMI less than 30, more than 5 portions of fruit & vegetables per day and regular physical activity.

Lifestyle medicine is all about educating & empowering individuals to make the right choices, supporting them through that process of change, and just as importantly, championing improvements in our environment. Whilst we all choose how we live our lives, lifestyle medicine does not judge people for the choices they make or blame them for their disease. We acknowledge that none of us live in complete isolation without any external influences. Our environment can either constrain or liberate us.

Lifestyle Medicine focuses on the six main pillars of personal health:

  1. healthful eating- whole foods, mostly plants
  2. increase physical activity
  3. restorative sleep
  4. strategies to manage stress
  5. avoidance of risky substances
  6. enhanced social connections

As well as considering the broader factors that impact an individuals’ health and well-being. Poverty, health inequality, social isolation, loss of culture and identity as well as looking after the health of our planet. These factors are all interwoven and influence each other, so we need to be looking at the big picture to improve our happiness and vitality.

Behavioral Medicine and Lifestyle Medicine Therapist will not replace your physician or primary care provider or specialist. Our goal is to work together with all members of your healthcare team. Our expertise lies in managing chronic diseases rather than treating acute medical problems. For acute care and medical emergencies, you will need to seek help from your primary care physician.

Consult online like many other clients for a safe Lifestyle Medicine Therapy Session via video, skype, google meet or zoom. Many of our clients have safely shifted to online therapy in the times of corona covid-19 virus lock-down. Make sure therapy slots are available to prevent inconvenience!

We provide psychotherapy services online over zoom and we have clients of Indian origin who have settled abroad, he has catered to clients from America, Australia, Canada, Germany, France, Netherlands, etc. and clients from all over India especially to patients from Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Pune and Nagpur.

We provide counseling in Hindi, English and Gujarati. You will need a high speed internet connection, safe silent space and good quality headphones. Many clients get used to the technology within few sessions.
